this is paul ryan who on fox news on sunday couldn't explain the romney/ryan tax plan. not because it's complicated, because the math don't add up. and for the middle class it hurts the middle class. it digs the middle class into the dead years of 2000 to 2010. >> how problemmatic? >> the republicans have nothing but gaffes. they love when joe biden speaks because for some reason they like to take those comments and blow them out of proportion flt i just think it's nonsense. if they want to talk about joe biden and who will help the middle class, that's an argument i think the democrats would like to have. >> there will be a lot of discussion of joe biden's remarks right now. >> donna's right. we like to talk about joe biden because he gives us a lot to talk about. in a few weeks we'd miss joe biden, the gift that keeps on giving. only in washington is a truth called a gaffe when it's not politically convenient. what he said right now is the truth. it is harmful. it is harmful because it is the truth. because it's going to ring true with the middle class. and because it

the harvard and yale debates, will be paul ryan and joe biden. they will be better at it. romney is good in a group setting, not done a lot of one-on-one. john mccain wasn't the best debater either. he doesn't blow anybody away. >> i spoke with nate silver from the "new york times" who has looked at all the polls and how much ground mitt romney has to gain, as much as seven points, a lot to gain in some of the key battleground states through a debate performance when two guys can be very well prepared, one sitting president. >> kerry did it though against bush. >> i don't know that he made up all that ground. >> it's not the debate, what is it for mitt romney the last five and a half weeks of this campaign to change it? >> i think he does have to go big. he has to have a couple of really big ideas that connect with the american people and where they are. the economy is slowly getting better. there are real doubts about medicare plan that paul ryan has put in place that is beginning to hurt them in the battleground states. i don't think there's one thing that can turn it ar

did you hear paul ryan, if i heard this correctly, if i heard paul ryan correctly, he said he cannot explain mitt romney's tax policy, at least not the whole thing because, well, it would take too long. we'll play some of that sound for you in a moment. romney and ryan, they are clear about this. that they would cut everyone's tax rate 20%. cut and dry, 20% rate cut. but, to protect the government's revenue stream, they would have to kill certain deductions and certain loopholes, but they won't be specific, won't say which ones those would be. here is congressman ryan, he starts by trumpeting the tax rate cut. >> lowering tax rates by broadening the tax base works. and you can -- >> but i have to -- >> no. >> but you haven't given me the math. i don't have the -- it would ta me too long to go through all the math. >> too long to go through the math, he says. but ryan did go on to hint, didn't promise, but he hinted that a romney administration would look at tax loopholes enjoyed by the wealthy. here's that. >> when you close a tax write-off or tax shelter for a higher income person,
